Hummers Touted as Rescue Vehicles, Ads Mum on Environment

Oct. 30, 2007 Buy a Hummer, save a life? Concerned that the gas-guzzling SUV has become "an icon for all things evil," the honchos at GM are unveiling a new ad campaign that shows how rescue workers rely on the muscle-bound vehicles to perform acts of heroism, Ad Age reports.

The "Hummer Heroes" advertising campaign will be supplemented by a website called Hummer Helps, which will encourage owners to send in stories and photos that illustrate how they assisted the needy with their SUVs.

In the words of one Hummer owner: "Nobody asked me what kind of fuel economy I was getting" when delivering water via Hummer to Hurricane Katrina victims in remote locations.
