Shell Carbon-to-Flowers Ad Ruled "Misleading"

Nov. 8, 2007 Shell's advertising claim that carbon dioxide was used to grow flowers has been called "misleading" by the Advertising Standards Authority, a U.K. watchdog group.

The ad shows an oil refinery sprouting flowers, with a tagline that reads "Don't throw anything away there is no away."

The nonprofit group Friends of the Earth brought the ad to ASA's attention, pointing out that just 0.325% of the company's carbon emissions were used to grow flowers, Reuters reports.

The ASA said in the "absence of qualification," it found the claims were "most likely to be misleading."

Shell withdrew the advertisement in June and says it will not be aired again.
