FTC Sets Sights on Green Packaging Claims

March 4, 2008 - The Federal Trade Commission has announced the second in a series of public workshops being held as part of the agency’s regulatory review of the “Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims,” commonly known as the Green Guides. The workshop, slated for April 30 in Washington, D.C., will examine green packaging claims and consumer perceptions about them.

The session will evaluate increasingly popular green-marketing terms such as "recyclable," "sustainable," "biodegradable," and "compostable." It will also explore the use of environmental seals and third-party certification programs that claim to verify environmental preferable product packaging.

The commission’s first Green Guides workshop, held in January, examined the marketing of carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates.
