Green Planet Launches 100% Plant-Based Bottled Water

March 3, 2010 – A new bottled water brand has been launched this week, called Green Planet, which is manufacturing recyclable, commercially compostable, and BPA & petroleum-free bottles along with healthier water.

Green Planet “isn’t just their name. It’s their mission.” Founder Bradford Schulman expects to make it a well-known national brand, just as he did with Mighty Leaf Tea and Intelligentsia Coffee.  The Green Planet brand is now tapping into an $11 billion bottled water market with their new 100% plant-based bottle.

Most plastic bottles on the market are made from petroleum, which emits harmful greenhouse gases in the manufacturing process and leaches its chemicals into your water if the bottle gets too hot or cold.  These bottles are also shipped all over the world from “glaciers” and “tropical islands”, only to end up overflowing landfills.

The new water bottle by Green Planet is made from 100% annually renewable plants and is is qualified under the USDA’s BioPreferred program, which aims to increase the purchase and use of renewable, environmentally-friendly biobased products.  These products will soon carry the program’s voluntary label for easy identification.

Green Planet also touts its own cradle-to-cradle recycling program with buybacks of all of its bottles.  Because Green Planet’s bottles don’t leach petroleum-based chemicals into the water, consumers can reuse the bottles over and over without concern, or have them fully composted in 80 days. The brand also sources its vapor-distilled water within 500 miles of each market to lessen their carbon footprint.

Green Planet water is currently available in a 16.9oz. size, while the 12oz. and 1L bottles will be available this spring.  The product is being distributed where its offering will count towards LEED certification, such as in schools, corporate campuses, and hotels.  It will soon be available at some restaurants, convenience stores, and public facilities.

I say no to any kind of bottled water - kick the habit

I agrere with you Denny, all these inovations are caught up in the same negative cycle of production and in the end dont resolve the water problem, as production, resources, transports are only ways to increase water polution generaly and all we really want is water from the tap drinkabl, safe. Deep dive and you see the root of the problem is still there, a bad seed with roots that will make bad fruits grow, even if a bit less sick and contaminated. Gosh. What's wrong with us, we destroy the water resources and now make water a business, with or without plastic! In my old times everybody drank water from tap all the time, for free, everywhere we went.

Green Planet is missing the point

Great new fancy bottles. Green Planet is still bottling water and shipping it around the country. I would like to know a life cycle analysis of tap water versus the water delivered in a new bio plastic bottle. By calling this green, Green Planet ignores the externalities associated with its production of bottled water. An important point, which not mentioned about the bottle buy back program is that these bottle then need to be shipped BACK to another location to be composted. You are probably better off using the plastic bottles and making sure they are recycled than tainting the recycling stream with bottles that cannot be recycled. I applaud the efforts of Green Planet to find another way than plastic. Try this, get a Klean Kanteen, get up walk into your kitchen and turn on your tap. Ahhh water at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the % of green house gas emissions from the extraction of raw materials, transport, refrigeration, production, transport again, and recycling of said green bottle. Thanks but not thanks.

In theory I agree with you,

In theory I agree with you, however, I live in the country and my only water source is a not very clean spring. I filter my tap water for cooking and coffee, but I have not yet found a filter that makes it entirely safe for drinking, hence, I must buy bottled water. I am glad that Green Planet has made it possible for me to do that in a safer, more responsible way.
