Xerox Greens Its Pitch at Top Printing Tradeshow

June 9, 2009 - Xerox is selling customers on its green-printing products with a two-story tradeshow exhibit that the company says embodies its sustainability strategy.

Xerox debuted a greener, more energy-efficient exhibit at the drupa 2008 printing show in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The 3,500-square-meter stand was built from recycled or reusable materials and components, including reused steel beams and walls and displays made of recycled board and sustainably harvested timber. Energy-efficient overhead lighting and video screens use 40% less power and generate 60% less heat than more conventional alternatives, according to Xerox.

Builders, materials, and products were sourced locally whenever possible, Xerox says. In addition, the company used a virtual platform for planning and designing the stand, further reducing the need for air travel.

The exhibit typifies Xerox's three-pronged strategy on sustainability, according to Tom Wetjen, vice president of the company's graphic communications unit. "First, we reduce our own environmental footprint. Second, we work with suppliers to help reduce their footprint. And third, we help our graphic communications customers to respond to their customers’ growing demand for green printing by introducing and educating print providers to digital opportunities."

Xerox says it plans to reuse much of the drupa exhibit structure at future events and to recycle most of the remaining materials.
