California Wineries Harvesting Solar Power Along with Grapes

Sept. 18, 2007 The California wine industry is making the most of its sun-drenched growing regions, installing solar arrays to power production facilities and tasting rooms across the state.

EOS Estate has just announced plans for a $3.8 million solar array the largest of any winery in the Central Coast region, according to the company.

Because of the abundant sunshine, California is the perfect place to harvest solar power and utilize it to create our award-winning wines," says Jeff Hopmayer, owner of EOS.

In Napa Valley, organic winery Frog's Leap has run entirely on solar since 2005, selling any excess power back to the electrical grid through a process known as "net metering." Other area wineries including Domaine Carneros, St. Francis, and Fetzer are using solar to augment traditional power sources, CNN reports.
