First North American Airline Goes Carbon Neutral
Sept. 28, 2007 Tiny Canadian carrier Harbour Air is set to become the first North American airline to make all of its flight services 100% carbon neutral.
The "world's largest all-seaplane airline" has pledged to become completely carbon neutral by the end of 2007. Beginning Oct. 1, the carrier will purchase carbon offsets to mitigate the climate impact of all its scheduled service, charter, and tour operations.
Harbour Air is further pledging to become the first carrier in the world to go 100% carbon neutral in its corporate operations as well. The company says will institute a policy to track, reduce, and offset its corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 2008.
"Everyone's talking about climate change and I am proud our seaplane company from British Columbia, Canada, is leading the charge in taking action to address it," said Greg McDougall, CEO of Harbour Air Seaplanes. "It is my hope that other airlines follow our lead. Simply put, it doesn't take much and the benefits are huge."
