U.S. Navy to Run Guantanamo Trucks on Fry Oil
Nov. 12, 2007 The U.S. military plans to test cooking-oil-fueled buses and trucks at its Guantanamo naval base in Cuba, Reuters reports.
The controversial prison camp produces about 1,500 gallons of used cooking oil each month in its galleys, restaurants, and home kitchens, according to the article.
The Navy recently purchased a biodiesel processor that will mix used cooking oil with diesel fuel. It says it will begin testing the fuel on utility trucks and all-terrain vehicles in January and may expand the program to include local buses in June.
