Airline Jettisons In-Flight Mags to Boost Fuel Efficiency

July 28, 2008 - International airline Emirates is banning in-flight magazines from its Airbus 380s in an effort to reduce aircraft weight, the Guardian reports.

Removing the two-kilogram magazine from each of the 380's 500 passenger seats will lighten the aircraft by a ton, helping to boost fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions, Emirates says.

"We are doing it because of fuel prices and the environment," according to Emirates' president Tim Clark, who says the printed magazine will be replaced by content shown on the aircraft's seat-back TVs.

With emissions caps on the horizon, the aviation industry is trying a range of strategies to reduce its carbon footprint, from developing renewable fuels to offering customers the chance to offset their emissions from air travel."
