British Columbia Imposes Carbon Tax
Feb. 21, 2008 - Following in the footsteps of other regional governments, Canada's westernmost province plans to impose a tax on carbon emissions, Reuters reports. Over objections by the Canadian national government, which opposes patchwork legislation of carbon emissions, British Columbia will levy the tax to help achieve its goal of reducing emissions 33% by 2020.
In the U.S., California's San Francisco Bay Area is considering a similar approach, although that plan calls its emissions penalty a fee since revenues will be applied to the region's anti-global warming efforts.
