Con-way Freight Cuts Emissions by Reducing Truck Speed
March 12, 2008 - Con-way Freight has modified the engine settings on
its fleet of 8,400 tractor-trailers in a bid to improve fuel
conservation and reduce carbon emissions. The truck engines' speed
governors have been reset to reduce maximum speeds from 65 to 62 miles
per hour.
The company expects the move will reduce consumption of diesel fuel from its tractor fleet by nearly 3.2 million gallons and prevent 72 million pounds of carbon from being released into the environment each year.
Con-way Freight is a member of the U.S. EPA's SmartWay Transport program, a voluntary public-private partnership aimed at reducing carbon emissions from the freight industry. Other emissions-reduction and fuel-efficiency efforts include equipping trucks with aerodynamic fairings to reduce wind resistance, converting to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, and setting engines with automatic shut-off controls to minimize idle time.
This year, parent company Con-way Inc. plans to roll out a formal program to promote sustainability across all its business units.
