Dell Meets Carbon Neutral Goal Five Months Early

Aug. 7, 2008 - Dell says it has either reduced or offset 100% of the company's carbon impact from global operations - months ahead of its end-of-year deadline.

Since 2004, the company's annual investment in renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, and methane-gas capture has grown from 12 million kWh to 116 million kWh - an increase of nearly 870%, according to Dell.

The company says it also saves more than $3 million and 20,000 tons of CO2 a year thanks to facilities improvements and various energy efficiency initiatives.

"Dell's to boost the energy efficiency of its operations and its green power purchases before focusing on carbon offsets is the right approach for achieving carbon neutrality," says Mindy S. Lubber, president of Ceres, a coalition of investors and environmental groups that worked with Dell on its climate change strategy.

In June 2007, Dell announced a long-term goal to become the "greenest technology company on the planet." It has since pledged to improve the environmental performance of its products, most recently unveiling its "greenest PC to date."
