DHL, USPS Named Greenest Shippers; FedEx, Not So Much

Dec. 14, 2007 DHL and the U.S. Postal Service have the strongest commitment to climate protection in the shipping sector, according to new rankings from the nonprofit Climate Counts. FedEx made the naughty list this year, coming in last out of 60 companies.

Even the top scorers left significant room for improvement, however. DHL led the sector with a score of 45 (out of 100), followed by the U.S. Postal Service with a score of 43. "While we're pleased the shipping sector has begun to take action on climate, they, like most of us in the business community, have a long way to go," says Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farm and board chair of Climate Counts.

Companies were scored according to performance in four key areas: carbon measurement and monitoring, concrete climate action steps, public support of climate policy initiatives, and quality of carbon footprint reporting.

Climate Counts also released a pocket-size holiday shopping guide ranking 60 retailers on climate commitment. Canon, Nike, and Unilever top the first annual Climate Counts Scorecard, while Amazon.com, Jones Apparel, Apple, eBay, Limited Brands, and Levi Strauss occupy the bottom of the list.

"The shipping sector has an enormous role to play in the fight to stop the climate crisis," says Wood Turner, project director of Climate Counts. "Our new ranking allows consumers to make informed decisions now and throughout the year."
