Dole Offsets Emissions from Costa Rican Bananas, Pineapples

April 23, 2008 - Dole has pledged to offset the carbon dioxide emissions from transporting its bananas and pineapples from Costa Rican packing plants to points of export from the country.

Under the agreement, Costa Rica's National Forestry Financing Fund will offer Dole carbon credits from government-certified forestry projects. The pact is part of a broader agreement Dole signed last August with the Costa Rican government to produce a carbon-neutral supply chain for bananas and pineapples.

Dole has taken aim at greenhouse gas emissions from other parts of its operations as well. In January, the company began converting farming equipment to biodiesel at two of its major agricultural plants in California and Arizona.
