Major Chinese Companies Join Climate Effort

Oct. 27, 2008 - Three of China s leading companies - including China Mobile, the world's largest wireless operator - have become the newest members of The Climate Group, a global climate coalition.

The CEOs of the new member companies, which also include Broad Air Conditioning and Suntech, pledge to reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions and to work with their stakeholders to accelerate a low-carbon economy.

"China is fast establishing itself as a major global hub for low carbon investment, technology and leadership," says Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group. "[These] CEO commitments are of national and global importance, and significantly strengthen the global business axis needed to address climate change."

A recent report published by The Climate Group - "China s Clean Revolution" - reveals that China is already the world s leading renewable energy producer and is over-taking more developed economies in exploiting valuable economic opportunities, creating green-collar jobs and leading development of critical low carbon technologies.

Earlier this year, the country made strides in adopting a green securities policy by requiring publicly held companies to release information on environmental risk before they can sell new shares. It also stipulates that highly polluting companies must pass environmental inspections when applying for an initial public offering or refinancing.
