Nokia Pledges More Energy-Efficient Chargers, Greener Operations

Jan. 30, 2008 -- Nokia has joined the WWF Climate Savers program, committing to improving the energy efficiency of its business operations and its products. The company is targeting a series of climate-conscious initiatives, including halving the stand-by energy used by its mobile phone chargers and using green electricity to power 50% of its facilities.

Participants in the Climate Savers program must commit to specific energy-saving activities and targets. Nokia's goals focus on three areas:

  • Product energy efficiency. The energy consumed by a cellphone charger that is left plugged in when not in use accounts for two-thirds of a cellphone's total energy use. Nokia aims to reduce this "no-load" power consumption by an average 50% by 2010. It will also roll out reminders for consumers to unplug the charger from the electrical outlet once the phone has been fully charged.

  • Site energy efficiency. Nokia will reduce the company's overall energy consumption 6% by 2012 through energy-efficiency programs at its offices and production sites worldwide.

  • Green energy sourcing. Nokia plans to increase its use of green electricity from 25% to 50% by 2010.
"As the world's largest mobile company we have a responsibility to look at how we can play our part in tackling climate change," says Kirsi Sormunen, Nokia's vice president of environmental affairs. "This is not about grand gestures but everyday things that when multiplied by the scale of our operations, or the 900 million people using Nokia devices globally, can have a major impact. It also makes good business sense, helping us find new ways to be more efficient and innovative."
