Phillies Make Biggest Carbon-Offset Buy in Pro Sports to Date
May 1, 2008 - The Philadelphia Phillies have purchased 20 million kilowatt-hours' worth of renewable energy certificates to offset the team's electricity use at Citizens Bank Park. The purchase of Green-e certified renewable energy certificates is the largest renewable-energy buy in professional sports to date, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Phillies are also the first Major League Baseball team to join EPA's Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program that encourages organizations to reduce their climate impact by buying energy from renewable sources. The team is now the third-largest Green Power Partner in Philadelphia and seventh largest in Pennsylvania.
The green-power buy also supports Major League Baseball's Team Greening program to incorporate environmentally sensitive practices at each ballpark. Citizens Park Bank is among the ballparks included in Aramark's new initiative to green concessions services during games.
