Safeway Converts Entire U.S. Truck Fleet to Biodiesel

Jan. 18, 2008 -- Supermarket giant Safeway has converted its entire U.S. fleet of more than 1,000 trucks to run on B20 biodiesel, a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel. The company estimates its converted fleet will save 75 million pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year.

Using biodiesel to power our transportation fleet will prevent millions of pounds of carbon emissions from being released into the environment," said Safeway CEO Steve Burd during a press conference today. "Our biodiesel program is just one of many initiatives underway that will make a positive impact on the environment."ƒ¢â‚¬Å¡ƒâ€š‚

The announcement was made against the backdrop of Safeway's solar-powered store in Dublin, Calif. the first of 23 such stores planned for California.
