Supermarkets to Stock Greener Refrigerators
Nov. 29, 2007 Major supermarket chains including Whole Foods, Food Lion, and Publix are promoting cleaner, more energy-efficient refrigeration techniques and they have a new logo to prove it.
Under the GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, supermarkets will work in collaboration with the refrigeration industry and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support refrigeration technologies and practices that use less energy and emit fewer greenhouse gases. Participating supermarkets will display the GreenChill logo in their refrigerated sections.
"As Americans make greener choices, we look for companies that support a greener lifestyle," says Robert J. Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator of EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. "The GreenChill logo is a clear sign of a supermarket's environmental commitment."
Participants in the program have pledged to take an inventory of their current refrigerant emissions and set reduction targets for each. Partners will also participate in a research initiative to rate new technologies in terms of energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and minimization of refrigerant leaks.
EPA estimates that GreenChill partners could save more than $12 million each year thanks to the technology improvements.
The ten founding GreenChill partners are: Whole Foods Market, Food Lion, Giant Eagle, Hannaford Bros., Harris Teeter, Hill Phoenix, Honeywell International, Kysor/Warren, Publix Super Markets, and DuPont.
