Xerox Hits Greenhouse Gas Target Six Years Early

Dec. 3, 2007 Xerox has already far exceeded its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 10% from 2002 levels by 2012. The company says it has cut emissions 18% and now plans for a 25% reduction by 2012.

Xerox reports that it cut 87,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2006 by increasing fuel efficiency of company vehicles, reducing its dependence on natural gas, and using less electricity. The company has replaced many of the printers, copiers, and fax machines in its offices with networked "multifunction" systems that use half the amount of electricity as standalone machines.

The combined efficiencies saved $18 million in energy costs last year, according to company estimates.

To meet its new greenhouse gas target for 2012, Xerox will focus on further reducing energy use in toner manufacturing operations. It will also seek to improve office heating and cooling functions by replacing outdated equipment and installing new climate-control features.
