Car Companies Lead Clean Energy Patents

June 20, 2008 - New fuel cell and hybrid-electric technologies continue to dominate the clean-tech landscape, putting the auto sector well ahead of solar, biofuels, and wind in the race for most patents, according to first-quarter results from the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index (CEPGI).

Honda had the most new granted clean energy patents (16) in the first quarter of 2008, followed by a second-place tie between General Electric (11) and General Motors (11). Automotive companies dominated the top ten with Nissan, Toyota, and Hyundai in the fourth, fifth, and sixths slots, and Ford coming in tenth.
