New Car Design Goes Lighter to Drive Greener
July 14, 2008 - It carries the exact same engine as its predecessor, but the new "Eco Elise" has been built 70 pounds lighter - an emerging trend for automakers looking to boost fuel efficiency without sacrificing power or speed, Newspress reports (via Motor Trend).
In addition to reducing the weight of the vehicle, Lotus designers looked at using sustainable materials wherever possible. The seats are covered in wool, the carpets are made from sisal, a renewable fiber. The composite for the seats, spoiler, and bumper are made of biodegradable hemp rather than fiberglass.
The car also boasts roof-mounted solar cells to take some of the load off the alternator, Lotus designers explain.
Lotus is one of a host of auto manufacturers infusing green design in their new models.
"The Lotus brand values of 'lightweight,' 'fuel efficient', and 'high performance' are more relevant today than they ever have been," says Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc. We are keen to...offer an ethical, green option that appeals to our customers."
The new Eco Elise will go on display at the British International Motor Show later this month.
