Office Water Bottles Just Got Healthier
February 11, 2010 – Ohio packaging manufacturer Grief, Inc. and Italian Blow-mold machine manufacturer Siapi have developed complimentary technologies which will produce the first high volume copolyester bottles made without BPA. Greif's aim is to replace the traditional plastic bottles most commonly used at office water coolers.
As Consumers have become more aware of the health risks associated with exposure to high levels of BPA, many companies have eliminated the chemical from individual size drinking containers and baby bottles. However, as BPA adds much needed rigidity to polycarbonate bottles, the larger sizes such as the 3 and 5 gallon containers used in office water coolers have continued to be manufactured with the chemical to enable pallet stacking and rough shipments.
Grief has developed a copolyester which does not need BPA for rigidity, and Siapi has manufactured the machines which can blow the bottles. While the investment in new machinery has held many companies back from altering their manufacturing practices, current legislation and private-sector bans may pave the way for a fast transition. Companies such as Wal-mart, Target, Walgreens and Babies-R-Us have already completed their phase-out of baby bottles containing BPA, and many consumers and demanding more. Washington State has passed a ban on BPA in food and beverage containers used to serve children under 3, and may expand the rules to include any sports water bottles. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Connecticut all have similar restrictions.
