Diamond Packaging Turns Wal-Mart Scorecard to Green Advantage
Nov. 9, 2007 Diamond Packaging says Wal-Marts Package Modeling software has been instrumental in its new Greenbox initiative, which aims to promote sustainability in all aspects of package production.
Wal-Marts Packaging Scorecard tool has helped put the concept of sustainable packaging in the forefront of many companies and consumers minds, and thus has been a key driver in trying to understand what sustainability truly is," says Dennis Bacchetta, Diamon'd director of marketing. "Several accounts have requested information on our experience with the Scorecard tool, and on our efforts to design more eco-friendly packaging, Bacchetta says.
Diamond's Greenbox initiative takes a holistic approach to packaging, the company says. In addition to package redesign, Diamond will address sustainability throughout its manufacturing process, incorporating best practices in recycling, process improvements, energy efficiency, and resource recovery and waste management. Diamond suppliers include Potlatch, a paperboard supplier that has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification and is recognized by The Rainforest Alliance.
"Sustainability optimizes the value of packaging through every phase of its lifecycle, from design to end of use," Bacchetta says. "Through creative design, careful material selection, and best practices at the plant level, Diamond is able to minimize waste, reduce shipping costs, and increase efficiencies , all of which support a sustainable use of resources and cultivate a positive emotional connection to the brand."
