Cisco Unveils Power-Saving Unified Computing System
March 18, 2009 - Cisco has unveiled a consolidated networking and virtualization platform that could cut datacenter operating costs by nearly a third thanks to improved energy efficiency.
The new Unified Computing System (UCS) integrates computing, networking, storage access, and virtualization resources into a single energy-efficient platform that can reduce IT infrastructure costs and help extend capital assets, according to Cisco.
Energy savings result primarily from simplication. UCS uses just half the components and requires less cabling compared to traditional server configurations, which significantly reduces power draw and cooling needs.
Cisco says its UCS can help datacenter operators cut capital expenditures up to 20% and operational expenditures up to 30%.
