IBM Dominates List of Top 500 Greenest Supercomputers

July 25, 2008 - IBM supercomputers have taken the top ten slots in this year's Green500, an annual ranking of the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world.

The Green500 list includes supercomputers spanning applications from astronomy to climate prediction ato pharmaceutical research. All ten top finishers run on either BladeCenter or Blue Gene technology provided by IBM.

Last month, IBM's Roadrunner supercomputer earned the number-one ranking on the Top500, a bi-annual list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. Roadrunner, which "sips" power to deliver a record-breaking 437 million calculations per watt, finished third on the green list this year.

The potent combination of speed and energy efficiency appears to be gaining currency at elite computing facilities. For the first time, the three top supercomputers in the Green500 all run faster than 400 megaflops per watt.
