Purchasing Departments Hold More Sway over Green IT Decisions
April 2, 2008 - Attention IT managers: It may be time to cozy up to your company's purchasing department. As more businesses adopt green procurement
policies, these executives will have an increasing role in selecting
IT equipment and vendors based on environmental performance, according to Forrester's "Five Green IT
Trends That Will Impact the IT Infrastructure and Operations
Professional."
The report notes that 38% of businesses currently include environmental criteria in their evaluation and selection of IT purchases - a 13% jump over the past six months. In addition, more CEOs are bringing in outside consultants to advise on key green IT decisions, such as asset sourcing, operations, and disposal.
The report suggests that IT managers can avoid being "caught by surprise" during the purchasing process by taking steps now to optimize energy efficiency and increase executive awareness of their department's environmental progress.
