Miller Brewing Saves Fuel, Cuts Greenhouse Emissions Per Barrel
Oct. 10, 2007 Miller Brewing Co. has cut fuel consumption by 6% and and greenhouse gas emissions by 10% per barrel of beer, according to the company's first-ever sustainability report.
The 18-page report also details Miller's progress in the areas of corporate responsibility, conservation, and recycling. Highlights include the following:
- Process efficiencies have enabled Miller to conserved 196 million gallons of water last year equal to the amount needed to brew and package 21 million cases of beer, according to company estimates.
- By reducing the amount of aluminum used in its cans, Miller says it has saved 622 tons of aluminum enough to manufacture cans for 2.2 million cases of beer.
- The company's largest breweries have installed recycling programs that now keep 99.3% of brewery waste from landfilil, including glass, aluminum, and cardboard.
"The actions detailed in our report are just a start," says Miller CEO Tom Long. "We are undertaking these projects and initiatives for all the right reasons, and are working towards a successful and sustainable future. It's good for business, the environment and the communities we serve."
