Wal-Mart Stocks Reusable Shopping Bags

Oct. 12, 2007 Wal-Mart will begin offering reusable shopping bags to encourage customers to cut down on plastic waste, the [Arkansas] Morning News reports. The washable, recyclable bags are made from 85% recycled material and cost $1 each.

Speaking at Wal-Mart's Live Better Sustainability Summit in Arkansas this week, CEO Lee Scott said green efforts such as this have helped reposition the company as a market innovator. "It wasn't done as a marketing ploy," he said. "It wasn't done for any other reason that this was an extraordinary business opportunity, but the outcome for our shareholders and for the environment has been clearly an improvement in Wal-Mart's perception among the influence makers in this country."
