Alcoa Urges Employees to "Make an Impact" on Climate

Sept. 22, 2008 - Alcoa has partnered with the Pew Center on Global Climate Change on a new program to encourage its employees and local communities to manage their carbon footprint and reduce energy costs.

The new Make an Impact program includes an interactive website with tools to reduce energy consumption and tips on living more sustainably. The website features a carbon-footprint calculator as well as a directory of interactive workshops to help individuals minimize their climate impact.

The program is part of the Alcoa s overall sustainability strategy, which has incorporated a 33% corporate reduction in emissions from a 1990 base, and an $8 million investment in community-driven climate change projects in the last year, according to company president and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld.

"By providing our 97,000 employees the tools to understand and manage their environmental impact, we support them in being part of the solution to global climate change," says Kleinfeld.

Companies are taking different approaches to meet employee demand for more environmental information. India's leading IT provider, WIPRO, has developed "eco chapters" engaging employees on green issues so they can apply their learnings to company projects.
