BofA Charges into the Green Credit Card Market

Nov. 30, 2007 Bank of America has become the latest major company to offer a credit card that helps customers offset their climate impact by investing in clean renewable energy projects.

Customers can use the new Brighter Planet Visa card to earn one "Earthsmart" point for every dollar spent in purchases. Points are automatically redeemed each month to support renewable energy projects in the U.S. (It takes 1,000 points to offset one ton of carbon dioxide.) Bank of America says it will contribute an additional point for every two points earned through December 2008.

The Brighter Planet website allows cardholders to monitor the clean energy projects funded from their card use and track their footprint reduction progress from the use of the card.

The program is also available to current Bank of America WorldPoints cardholders.

General Electric launched a similar credit card in July.
