Corporate Climate Reporters Rallying Around GHG Protocol
March 25, 2008 - Under increasing pressure to report on climate
management practices, more companies are turning to a standardized
framework for publishing emissions data. Well over half (63%) of
Fortune 500 corporate responsibility reports released last year align
their climate communications with guidelines set out by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, according to a new study from CorporateRegister.com.
The report, which evaluates 2007 non-financial reports from the Global
FT500, finds that 87% address climate
change "to varying degrees." Some highlights:
- Of the 63% of climate reporters that align with the GHG Protocol, 45% meet the most rigorous Scope 3 standard, which requires companies to include emissions from sources such as employee travel and product transport.
- 65% of the reports include a separate section devoted to climate change, and 41% address climate in the CEO's introduction.
- 78% of the reports provide quantitative data on greenhouse as emissions, of which 40% include both absolute and relative numbers.
- Just half of the reports include commitments to emissions reduction, with 37% setting specific, measurable targets and 14% opting for broad objectives.
