Coke Expands 100% Recycling Goal to Include Aluminum Cans

Feb. 21, 2008 - Coca-Cola plans to recycle or reuse all of the aluminum beverage soda cans it sells in the U.S. The new goal expands on the companyƒ‚¢ƒÂ¢¢â‚¬Å¡‚¬ƒÂ¢¢â‚¬Å¾‚¢s previous pledge, announced in September, to recycle or reuse 100% of its PET plastic bottles sold in the U.S.

"We have made a commitment to ensure the sustainability - and recyclability - of our packaging," says Sandy Douglas, president of Coca-Cola North America. "We envision a world in which our packaging is no longer seen as waste, but as a valuable resource for future use."

The beverage industry has been struggling to answer criticism from environmental and consumer groups that plastic bottles frequently end up in landfills instead of being recycled. Coke in particular is bracing for an anti-plastic bottle campaign that's expected to flood its mailrooms with used water bottles this summer. In October the company pledged $60 million to build new recycling plants, one of which will be the largest bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in the world.
