Grand Central's CFLs Save $100,000 a Year

April 24, 2008 - Metro-North Railroad has installed compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) throughout New York's Grand Central Terminal in a move the company estimates will save $100,000 a year on utility bills, Progressive Railroading reports.

Metro-North began transitioning from incandescents several years ago, but couldn't make the switch in historic areas without permission (recently granted) from the New York State Historic Preservation Office. Due to historic considerations, Metro-North had to wait until CFLs could be designed to resemble the terminal's original bulbs.

There are now 1,700 CFLs installed throughout Grand Central.
