HP Releases New CSR Report, Names Top Suppliers
April 4, 2008 - Hewlett-Packard has published its 2007 corporate
responsibility report, announcing that the company has already reached
its goal to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions 20% below
2005 levels by 2010.
HP now plans to achieve an additional 5% reduction in energy use and climate emissions by 2010. The reductions extend beyond company operations to include product use as well; for example, the company recently pledged to boost energy efficiency of its PCs by 25%, and its Dynamic Smart Cooling system cuts datacenter power consumption by a reported 20%.
HP reports another milestone: It has exceeded its goal to recycle 1 billion pounds of electronic products and supplies by the end of 2007. The company now pledges to recover another 1 billion pounds for reuse and recycling by the end of 2010. (HP is also generating new products from non-electronic waste materials, manufacturing printer cartridges from recovered plastic bottles.)
In addition, HP says extensive supplier audits have revealed "strong progress" toward achieving environmental goals; in a bid toward greater transparency, the tech giant has published a list of its largest suppliers (PDF) - an industry first.
“HP is sharing our list of top suppliers to
enable collaboration, increase supplier accountability and build on our
commitment to supply chain transparency,” according to
Mark Hurd, HP chairman and chief executive officer. “We
work closely with our suppliers to promote improved social and
environmental practices."
HP’s top suppliers must comply with the Electronic Industry Code of Conduct (EICC) and also meet social and environmental responsibility standards set out by the company. In January, HP joined the Supply Chain Leadership Collaboration, a corporate initiative to assess greenhouse gas emissions from global supply chains.
