New Technology Captures Energy from Moving Vehicles

April 9, 2009 - An outfit called New Energy Technologies (NET) claims to have developed a prototype motion-sensing device that can harness the kinetic energy of moving vehicles.

Dubbed MotionPower, the portable device can be set up in high-traffic areas to capture the energy of moving cars and other light vehicles as they drive by. NET says that its new technology could be used to augment or replace conventional electricity supplies for powering roadway signs and street and building lights, among other applications.

"With nearly 250 million cars traversing America's roadways, we're poised to capitalize on an untapped commercial opportunity, while delivering timely cost-savings and long-term environmental benefits to energy consumers," says Meetesh V. Patel, Esq., CEO of New Energy Technologies.

Not useful until we have green vehicles.

I just don't see this being a useful innovation until our vehicles' energy source is greener than the grid's. If energy is being captured from vehicles, that means it's reducing the vehicles' efficiency. Essentially, our currently gas- and diesel-powered vehicles will spew a little more pollution and greenhouse gas into densely populated urban areas to power traffic lights, saving a little energy from power plants that spew pollution farther away from people. If cars are electric-powered, this technology would just be adding two steps between the power plant that creates the energy and the traffic lights. Once vehicles are electric-powered from renewable sources like solar and wind this technology could become useful. Let's work on that part first, eh?
