Starbucks Wants 50% of Store Energy to Come from Renewable Sources
May 14, 2008 - Starbucks says it aims to power all of its stores with 50% renewable energy and incorporate green building standards into all new-store construction by 2010.
The announcement comes as company details its progress toward sustainable coffee sourcing in its 2007 corporate social responsibility report. Highlights include:
- Purchasing 65% of its coffee in fiscal 2007 through Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices, the company's sustainable coffee program. Starbucks has sent a new goal to purchase 80% of its coffee from C.A.F.E.-approved suppliers by 2013.
- Purchasing 20 million pounds of Fair Trade-certified coffee in 2007. Starbucks says it is currently the largest purchaser and distributor of Fair Trade coffee in North America.
Starbucks recently extended its partnership with Conservation International to support farmers and communities who are preserving forests in coffee-growing regions.
