Top LCD Manufacturer Looks to Rewire "Green DNA"

Feb. 21, 2008 - AU Optronics, a major manufacturer of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, is looking to weave green goals into its corporate DNA, targeting environmental improvements in procurement, processing, logistics, and product design. The company's sweeping new initiative, called "Green Solutions," aims for a 70% reduction in water use from 2004 levels, and a 70% cut in greenhouse gas emissions, also from 2004 levels - all within the next three years.

AU has pledged to incorporate environmental criteria into the design and manufacture of all new products. The company is also implementing a variety of smaller programs geared toward greening the office environment, such as replacing disposable paper cups with reusable ones, using eco-friendly cutlery, reducing business travel by establishing IT communication platforms, and planting trees on its factory grounds.

"AUO is proud to make a long-term commitment to improve products, supply chains, and the manufacturing process in a way that will reduce environmental impact," says Dr. LJ Chen, AUO president. "We want environmental responsibility to reach all parts of AUO."
