Yahoo "Green Screen" Shows Company's Energy Use in Real Time
March 4, 2008 - Yahoo has set up an interactive energy-monitoring display at its corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif. The "Yahoo green screen" shows employees the campus' energy use in real time.
The green screen translates energy consumption data into a variety of formats - megawatt hours, tons of carbon, or
dollars, for example - enabling users to calculate energy use per building, or per worker. The display also features tips to help employees reduce their carbon footprint.
"Empowering green actions through our employees and across our business is something we take very seriously," Yahoo Green Team leader Kate Gerwe writes on the company's corporate blog. "Our hope is that this opens a healthy dialogue about our energy usage and empowers our employees to be more aware of our impact on the environment, and engages them to take action in their own way."
Yahoo plans to roll out green screens at more corporate campuses
over time, according to Gerwe. The service is currently available to Yahoo employees worldwide via the company's intranet system.
