Turn Your Old IT Equipment into "Green Philanthropy"

Sept. 27, 2007 The nonprofit TechSoup has launched a nationwide program to save "used but useful" electronics from landfill and keep toxic and hazardous materials out of the waste stream.

The new Refurbished Computer Initiative accepts companies' unwanted IT assets (working or not), repairs any equipment that still has a useful life, and donates the refurbished electronics to nonprofit organizations and low-income families helping to keep toxic and hazardous materials out of the waste stream.

TechSoup has partnered with IT asset management firm Redemtech to handle the liability and regulatory requirements associated with disposing unwanted IT equipment.

"Nonprofits around the country badly need good low-cost computers. Our only challenge now is supply," says program director Jim Lynch. "TechSoup is currently identifying large companies and other organizations able to donate their used, commercial-grade personal computers and other office equipment, and participate in the RCI program as recognized partners."
