Sun Launches Servers Based on New Energy-Efficient Chip

Oct. 15, 2007 Sun has unveiled the first servers based on its UltraSparc T2 chip, introduced in August as a high-performance, energy-efficient microprocessor geared toward business applications such as hosting websites and running corporate networks, ZDNet reports.

Sun says the new servers deliver the same performance in a quarter of the space and at less than half the cost of competing systems, according to the article.

"Power efficiency is becoming the most attractive element of computing infrastructures," says Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz. "We have a huge shot at being the leader in power-efficient computing."

The new products are part of Sun's push to boost sales performance in the global server market. The company is currently lagging behind rivals IBM and HP.
