Nokia's Small But Significant Step
Nokia's recent pledge to develop energy-efficient products as part of their participation in the World Wildlife Fund's Climate Savers program demonstrates how creative companies can be in reducing their energy and carbon footprint.
The striking move here is that not only is Nokia committing to reducing its site energy use and buying green power but it is also moving toward reducing the impact of its products on energy and carbon demand. (Nokia is aiming to reduce the "no-load" power consumption of its cellphone chargers 50% by 2010.)
When will energy- and carbon-efficient products be the norm and not a differentiation strategy? One can get a clue from the latest U.S. energy bill, which contains a provision to phase out incandescent bulbs because they are inefficient. What products are next, and which companies will manage to stay ahead of the sustainability curve? I'd say Nokia has a head start.
