National Grid to Create "Carbon Budgets" for Business Operations

National Grid has upped its already ambitious emissions reduction goal from 60% to 80% by 2050. The utility says it will integrate "carbon budgets" into the day-to-day management of its American and British electricity and gas businesses beginning next April. Read more...

Bold climate commitments aside, companies continue to overlook the role of IT in minimizing carbon footprint - and CIOs seem reluctant to act as changemakers, according to a new report from the Economist Intelligence Unit. The survey of senior executives finds that despite the availability of climate-friendly technologies such as teleworking, video conferencing, and supply-chain optimization, just 36% of companies specifically mention IT activities in their emissions-reduction plans. DHL Targets 30% Reduction in Carbon Footprint
Deutsche Post World Net, the logistics division of DHL, is targeting a 30% reduction in carbon emissions for "every letter mailed, every container shipped, and every square foot of warehouse space used" by the year 2020. The new GoGreen program was created in part to satisfy growing demand among climate-conscious corporate customers, according to Deutsche Post CEO Frank Appel. Read more...
