Five Hidden Industry Costs of Climate Change

The true economic cost of climate change in the U.S. remains uncounted, unplanned for, and largely hidden in public debate, says a new study from the University of Maryland.

"The U.S. Economic Impacts of Climate Change and the Costs of Inaction" notes that while much of the public debate has focused on the upfront costs of emission controls, there's been only limited research on subsequent expenses, such as rebuilding or preparing infrastructure to address the economic ripple effects on the agricultural, manufacturing, and public service sectors. This report aims to bridge that gap. Read more...

Financial Times Special Report on Sustainable Business

A quick scan of the Financial Times' October 2007 special edition on sustainable business calls climate the "big issue of the moment," and they're not kidding. Of 18 features we counted seven that dealt with global warming directly, including discussions of carbon labeling, weather forecasts to assess risk, green transport, assessing suppliers' carbon footprint, and the effects of climate change on investors and the insurance industry. No major new ground explored here, although it's great to see so many key issues covered in one place.
