Why "Green IT" Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Notice something different this week? Welcome to "Sustainable IT Update," your biweekly report on how information technology is driving the larger trend toward responsible, sustainable business. Don't get us wrong - we love "green" - but the editors at SLM felt the word failed to sum up the triple bottom line benefits (environmental, social, and economic) that smart IT applications have to offer.

In this issue and those to follow, you'll find not just the latest trends in "green IT" but also stories on how IT can offer broader business benefits, such as boosting building efficiency (as with the new lighting-control system at Beijing's Olympic Village), reducing the need for expensive business travel (witness the trend toward videoconferencing at Deloitte and throughout the investment banking sector), and providing opportunities for better employee engagement (see Microsoft's efficiency-incentive programs). Enjoy!
