New Software Helps Companies Design More Climate-Friendly Supply Chains

Software vendor ILOG has released a new computer application that helps companies create supply chains with smaller carbon footprints. The program, an extension of ILOG's LogicTools suite of supply chain applications, enables companies to model the climate impact of various supply chain configurations and transportation strategies so they can choose the most environmentally - and financially - preferable option. IT Managers Wary of Suppliers' Green Claims
While most IT departments are working to implement green programs and practices, many datacenter managers question equipment vendors' claims on environmental performance, according to a new survey from Aperture Research Institute, a market research firm. Forty-two percent of respondents say they have no way to validate those claims, and 26% percent call them "outright hype." Read more...

Woolworths Dodges Bullet over Green Labeling Scandal
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has halted its investigation into Woolworths' green label for its store brand of tissue products, saying the matter is too complex to determine exactly who is at fault, The Age reports. Australia's largest supermarket chain got a drubbing last August when it failed to double-check the claims of its supplier, an Indonesian firm that has been widely criticized for its unsustainable forestry practices. Wal-Mart to Work with Chinese Suppliers on Green Initiatives
Wal-Mart plans to meet with its Chinese suppliers this fall in a bid to improve environmental performance at the factories that manufacture its products, Reuters reports. CEO Lee Scott told the Wall Street Journal ECO:nomics conference last week that the company is "going to deal more aggressively with the issues of sourcing in China." Read more...

EPA Tightens Smog Rules for Ships, Trains
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved stricter emission standards for diesel locomotive and marine engines. The new standards aim to cut particulate pollution from diesel engines by 90% and smog-forming oxides of nitrogen by 80%. Read more...
