Wal-Mart has officially begun using its packaging scorecard to rate suppliers on their progress toward developing sustainable packaging. Survey: One in Five U.K. Companies Has Hired a "Green Guru"
Twenty percent of U.K. companies have in place a dedicated head of sustainability or "green guru," according to a new survey from Genesys Conferencing. An additional 20% say that functional heads such as the chief technical officer (CTO), chief operating officer (COO), or their equivalents have responsibility for spearheading environmental change throughout the organization. U.K. Food and Drink Makers Make Water-Saving Pledge
Twenty-one of the U.K.'s leading food and drink makers, including Cadbury Schweppes, Nestle, and Unilever, have pledged to use less water in their manufacturing operations. Under the new Federation House Commitment, jointly developed by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and the nonprofit Envirowise, the companies have pledged to review their current water use and create site-specific water efficiency plans within the next six months. Wal-Mart Fires Up First Sam's Club Solar Array
Wal-Mart has completed a 390-kilowatt solar power system at its Sam's Club store in Chino -- the first of seven California locations to receive solar array under an agreement with solar provider SunPower. Wal Mart has purchased a total of 4.6 megawatts of solar power from SunPower and other solar providers for 22 Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs, and distribution centers in Hawaii and California. Intel Announces Green Power Buying Spree
Intel is set to overtake PepsiCo as the largest purchaser of green power in the U.S. The tech giant will purchase more than 1.3 billion kilowatt hours a year in renewable energy certificates (RECs), a record-setting purchase that the company hopes will help stimulate the market for green power.
