Report: CIOs Being Frozen Out of Firms' Climate Strategies
Bold climate commitments aside, companies continue to overlook the role of IT in minimizing carbon footprint - and CIOs seem reluctant to act as changemakers, according to a new report from the Economist Intelligence Unit. The survey of senior executives finds that despite the availability of climate-friendly technologies such as teleworking, video conferencing, and supply-chain optimization, just 36% of companies specifically mention IT activities in their emissions-reduction plans. National Grid to Create "Carbon Budgets" for Business Operations
National Grid has upped its already ambitious emissions reduction goal from 60% to 80% by 2050. The utility says it will integrate "carbon budgets" into the day-to-day management of its American and British electricity and gas businesses beginning next April. Read more...
Hearst Corporation HQ Targets Zero Waste
Hearst Corporation has implemented a "target zero-waste" policy at its Manhattan headquarters - one of the largest single-building landfill-diversion programs in the U.S. The 850,000-square-foot tower boasts a new organic waste composting program for its sizable kitchen, as well as an aggressive recycling effort that aims to recover all paper, metal, glass, and plastics generated in the building. Nike Helps Asian Suppliers Slash Energy Use
Nike has completed the first phase of an energy-efficiency project aimed at boosting energy efficiency among its footwear suppliers in Southeast Asia. The sports-apparel giant is working with four supplier factories in China and Vietnam to find out how much energy each factory consumes and identify the biggest opportunities to reduce or optimize energy use. 72% of Businesses "Paying More Attention" to Energy Efficiency?
Nearly three-quarters (72%) of businesses say they are paying more attention to building energy efficiency than they were just a year ago, according to Johnson Controls' second-annual Energy Efficiency Indicator survey. But the percentage of companies expecting to add energy-efficiency upgrades to planned capital investments over the next year has remained flat. Read more...
