Mitsubishi Electric Targets 30% Carbon Cut from Manufacturing, Product Use

Oct. 22, 2007 Mitsubishi Electric has unveiled Environmental Vision 2021, a long-term environmental management initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions and waste throughout the lifecycle of its products.

The company sets the following targets for 2021, the 100th anniversary of its founding:

  • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from product use by 30% (from 2000 levels) through technological innovations and energy-saving improvements in product design. The company estimates that its products emit 40 to 50 times more carbon dioxide during its life than during its manufacture.
  • Reduce total carbon dioxide from manufacturing operations by 30% (or 520,000 tons) regardless of company expansion.
  • Focus on developing new products that generate power from renewable sources, such as solar.
  • Reduce the total amount of materials use in business operations by 30%. The company also aims to recycle 100% of the plastic brought to its home appliance recycling plants.
  • Achieve zero emissions in the manufacturing process.
