Con-way Freight Earns Perfect Score on Fuel Efficiency
July 11, 2008 - Shipping giant Con-way Freight has received the highest possible fuel-efficiency score for 2007 under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership.
Con-way's three primary operating companies each received a Shipper Index Factor (SIF) of 1.25, indicating that they are not only taking advantage of commercially available fuel savings strategies but also exploring new savings methods and emerging technologies.
High SIF scores make carriers and logistics companies more attractive to freight shippers looking to shrink their carbon footprint, EPA says. Companies achieving the highest score are granted exclusive rights to use the trademarked SmartWay logo.
Con-way's SmartWay initiatives for 2007 included speed management, idling and aerodynamic control strategies, and engine and equipment upgrades. Taken together, these programs last year saved more than 3.5 million gallons of diesel fuel, or 3.8% of the company's total fuel consumption, according to EPA.
